Most parents spend months preparing for labor and birth, but very few receive any education on what happens once their baby arrives and feeding begins. A prenatal lactation consultation bridges that gap, helping families enter the postpartum period feeling informed, prepared, and supported. You start off with a plan, not a hope.
One of the greatest benefits of a prenatal appointment is confidence. Many of the challenges that cause stress in the first days and weeks of breastfeeding can be discussed before baby ever arrives. Together, we review what normal feeding looks like, how milk production works, common obstacles families encounter, and practical strategies to navigate them. Understanding what to expect often reduces anxiety and helps parents feel more empowered when feeding decisions arise.
Who Benefits Most From a Prenatal Lactation Consultation?
While every family can benefit from prenatal lactation education, some parents find these appointments especially valuable. A prenatal consultation allows us to identify potential challenges before baby arrives and create a personalized feeding plan tailored to your goals and medical history.
You may benefit from a prenatal lactation consultation if you:
Experienced low milk supply with a previous baby
Had a difficult breastfeeding journey in the past
Previously worked through tongue tie or oral function challenges
Have PCOS, thyroid disorders, diabetes, or gestational diabetes
Have a history of breast surgery or breast injury
Are expecting twins or multiples
Plan to return to work while breastfeeding
Intend to exclusively pump
Are a military family preparing for a move, deployment, or limited local support
Identifying risk factors during pregnancy allows us to develop a proactive feeding plan rather than trying to troubleshoot challenges during the stressful early postpartum period.
Learn Hand Expression Before Baby Arrives
During your consultation, you'll also learn detailed hand expression techniques. Hand expression is a valuable skill that can be used during pregnancy when appropriate, in the early postpartum period to support milk production, during engorgement, when baby is having difficulty latching, and throughout your breastfeeding journey whenever extra milk removal is needed. Learning this skill before birth allows you to practice and feel comfortable using it when the need arises. Want some quick tips, check out my video:
Another important topic is breast pump selection. Many parents choose a pump based on popularity, social media recommendations, or what worked for a friend. The reality is that the best pump is the one that fits your unique goals, anatomy, lifestyle, work plans, and feeding circumstances. During a prenatal consultation, you'll receive professional guidance to help you select equipment that is most likely to support your individual breastfeeding journey rather than relying on trial and error.
Perhaps the most valuable benefit is establishing a relationship before challenges arise. When questions come up at 2 a.m., when feeding isn't going as expected, or when you simply need reassurance, you already have a trusted lactation professional in your corner. Instead of scrambling to find support during a stressful moment, you'll know exactly who to reach out to and how to access help quickly.
Does TRICARE Cover Prenatal Lactation Visits?
Many military families are surprised to learn that lactation support may be covered by insurance, including TRICARE benefits.
As a military spouse myself, I understand the unique challenges military families face during pregnancy and postpartum. Whether you're preparing for your first baby, navigating a PCS, or welcoming a new addition while far from family support, having a feeding plan in place can make a tremendous difference.
TLC Lactation proudly supports families throughout Colorado Springs, Fort Carson, Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, Falcon, Fountain, Monument, and surrounding communities through both home visits and virtual consultations.
Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both mother and baby. While not every challenge can be prevented, preparation can make a tremendous difference. A prenatal lactation consultation provides education, practical skills, individualized planning, and ongoing support, and giving you a strong foundation before your baby ever arrives.
If you're expecting and would like to feel more prepared for your feeding journey, I'd love to help you build a plan that fits your family's unique needs.
